Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs is a beautiful town on the Gulf Coast about 45 minutes northwest of Tampa. It is a town rich in history and traditions of the Greek sponge divers who settled here over 100 years ago. Tarpon Springs is the largest sponge market in the world and this is one of the areas biggest attractions. Many of the original shops that opened to sell sponges and souvenirs have been handed down through generations and are still operating today. Currently there are over 100 shops supplying everything from trinkets to beautiful Greek style clothing, soaps, decorative items, and of course, hundreds of sponges in all shapes and sizes. Scattered among the shops are many eating-places, some internationally known.

There are dozens of fishing and sponge boats lining the docks and several of these offer half-day and full-day fishing trips into the Gulf of Mexico. For those who have never had the chance to ocean fish, this is a great opportunity for a fun time. Prices are reasonable, the crew does all the hard work, and it's fun for the whole family. It's a good idea to call ahead and make reservations for these outings.

There are also sightseeing cruises for those who want to just enjoy the beautiful coastal sights and sounds of the area.

Tarpon Avenue is part of the National Main Street program and is lined with many antique shops, artist galleries, and eating places.

There are several beaches in the area where families can spend the day sunning and playing in the water. Many of the parks have picnic areas and playgrounds for the kids. There are nature parks and walking trails nearby.

Tarpon Springs is a place to enjoy the seaside atmosphere and cultural history. Because there is so much here to see, plan to spend a couple of days, or come back throughout the year as there is always a festival, holiday or special event to take part in.
