From the Civil War to Civil Rights Alabama has had a major influence on this country and its people. The rich, complex and diversified history of this state contributed to many world changing events. It was the site of the Capital of the Confederate States during the Civil Was. Jefferson Davis and his family resided in Montgomery during this time and the Confederate White House still contains period furnishings and personal belongings that may be viewed by visitors.
Many years later Alabama was the state that saw the Civil Rights Movement start and once again changed the way the world looked at African-Americans. In 1955 the city of Montgomery was where Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man and the fight for equality for the African-Americans would go on well into the 1960's.
The state is the birthplace of Helen Keller, another great American that changed the world for many. There are abundant museums, historical homes and sites to visit throughout the state that pay tribute to not only those that lived and worked in Alabama, but also to many of the nations influential leaders. These include the church where Martin Luther King preached. The Edmund Pettus Bridge where marchers were attacked on "Bloody Sunday" in 1965 in Selma is an hour drive from Montgomery. There is the Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center where you can learn about the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all black military group to fight in World War II.
But, the state is much more than history and struggle for rights and freedom. The state is composed of mountains and lakes, caverns, waterfalls and white sand beaches. It is music and festivals and theater. It is warm, sunny summers and mild winters that attract visitors year-round.
The northern part of the state is filled with breathtaking mountain vistas and shimmering lakes. Activities in the area include hiking, fishing, golf, swimming, shopping and - spelunking (exploring caverns). You can rough it in a tent and sleep under the stars or find a cozy bed and breakfast or mountain lodge near one of the pristine lakes. There are even ski slopes to try during the winter. There are deep gorges to look over and several caverns to explore.
You may also like the many historic districts and villages that offer walking tours, shopping and great food. From history you can fast forward to space at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, all in Huntsville.
In the area surrounding Birmingham there are speedways along with a Mercedes assembly plant. Football games in nearby Tuscaloosa. Theme parks, lush gardens, state parks, nature parks, golf courses, and of course, more museums, shopping, dining and theaters are all here to see and enjoy.
You may spend anywhere from a week-end to a month exploring the River Region of Alabama. From the edge of the Mississippi River to a cotton plantation that takes the visitor back to the 19th century and on to historic Selma, this area provides a diversified look at both the history and beauty of the state.
The Gulf Coast and area around Mobile is a year-round destination for those looking to relax and enjoy the mild climate. Experience the sun-warmed beaches on Dauphin Island and Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan where the battle of Mobile Bay was fought during the Civil War. Monroeville where the production of "To Kill A Mockingbird" is held at the Old Courthouse Museum is held each spring. The courthouse was used as a model for the famous trial scene in the movie.
