Peaches. Pecans. Antebellum homes. And so much more. Georgia is a state that is filled with culture, history, sports, nature, entertainment and diversity. That could be one reason this state is the largest east of the Mississippi.
The state is composed of several geographic regions from the Cumberland Mountains in the Northwest to the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Northeast that give way to rolling hills, hardwood forests and roaring rivers. The mid section of the state is a fertile farm area where cotton and soybeans are raised. Southern Georgia is comprised of pine farms that make their way to the coastline where huge marshlands take over the landscape. The subtropical beaches and barrier islands are paradise to not only flora and fauna, but to the thousands of tourists that visit the state each year.
Georgia was founded in 1733 by a British General. He chose the site on a bluff above the Savannah River and with the help of Native Americans the city of Savannah was born. With the invention of the cotton gin the sparsely populated state exploded with the agriculture and economical boom. However, after the Civil War Georgia suffered a long period of recovery and it wasn't until the 1950's that the state once again became a home to industry. The Civil Rights movement played an important part in Georgia's history .
Georgia is a treasure for tourists and residents alike. Not only is it the biggest state east of the Mississippi, it also boasts of having the nation's largest fresh water swamp, a waterfall higher than Niagara Falls and the beginning of the Appalachian Mountains. The state is a blend of business, beauty, magnificent scenery, cities, hospitality and heart.
There is something for everyone to see and do in this southern gem. Whether you like sunning on pristine beaches, mountain hiking, a good game of golf or exploring the history of the area, it's all here. Stone Mountain Park, in the Atlanta area of the state, has the world's largest outcropping of exposed granite and also boasts of having the largest bass-relief carving. Savannah offers a look into the history of the state and the beautiful southern mansions while also providing a great dining, bar and entertainment scene. The southern region of the state is home to the Altamaha River where visitors can kayak, raft and canoe. Mountain areas greet visitors with old-world architecture, German-style bakeries, hiking trails and camping. The Southern River area includes a Butterfly Center, nature and bike trails and beautiful gardens of both flowers and vegetables.
There are a variety of tours you can take including those that let you relive the Civil War battlefields and cemeteries to Native American sites that date back over 15,000 years. You can discover their legends, customs, rituals language and crafts among other things. You can explore wetlands, islands, woodlands and swamps across the backcountry of this impressive state. There are fairs and craft shows throughout the state and almost year round. There is music to suit everyone's taste and even movie and television sets to visit.
Take plenty of time to enjoy true southern hospitality in Georgia. It is an adventure that will be long remembered.
